Level 2 Swim Teacher Training Standards

  1. Trainer: An active Trainer or higher may conduct the Level 2 Swim Teacher training program. The Trainer is to directly supervise, visually observe and evaluate all required
    knowledge and skills for Level 2 Swim Teacher.
  2. Equipment: Level 2 Swim Teacher participants are required to have all equipment listed in the training manuals.
  3. Content: The knowledge and skills to be covered in the Level 2 Swim Teacher program are those provided in the SSI Level 2 Swim Teacher Trainer Manual and the SSI Level 2 Swim Teacher Manual.
  4. Intent: The intent of the Level 2 Swim Teacher program is to provide non-certified swim teacher with the training necessary to teach swimming autonomously.
  5. Minimum Age: The minimum age for participation in the Level 2 Swim Teacher program is 16 years of age.
  6. Minimum Skill: Teachers in the Level 2 Swim Teacher program are to demonstrate effective watermanship skills that include a 200-yard swim using a stroke of their chosing and
    a 10-minute survival float without the use of any floatation aids.
  7. Prerequisite: A Swim Schools International certification of Level 1 Swim Teacher (/content/level-1-swim-teacher-training-standards) is required prior to certification of Level 2 Swim Teacher.
  8. CPR/First Aid: Teachers in the Level 2 Swim Teacher program are to maintain proof of current certification in CPR and first aid for children, infants and adults.
  9. Program Duration: The number of classes, hours and sessions per day are set by the individual Trainer, based on teacher needs, teacher ability, class availability and water
    conditions.
  10. Ratio: The maximum number of Level 2 Swim Teacher students for Classroom training is 12 to 1. The ratio may increase to 20 to 2 with a Certified Teacher assisting.
    The maximum number of Level 2 Swim Teacher students for In-Water training is 10 to 1. The ratio may increase to 12 to 2 with a Certified Teacher assisting or 16 to 3 with two Certified Teachers assisting.
  11. Final Exam: Each teacher receiving a Level 2 Swim Teacher certification must have passed a Final Exam with a minimum passing score of 80%.
  12. Apprenticeship: Each teacher receiving a Level 2 Swim Teacher certification must have completed a minimum 12 hours of apprenticeship under a certified Level 2 Swim Teacher.
  13. Certification: Level 2 Swim Teacher entitles the holder to teach swim lessons to Intermediate I, Intermediate II, Advanced I, Advanced II and Junior Olympian swim students autonomously.
  14. Active Status: Active Level 2 Swim Teachers are required to maintain current professional liability insurance (if required in the local area) and current SSI Level 2 Swim Teacher materials.
