Level 1 Swim Teacher Training Standards
Trainer: An active Trainer or higher may conduct the Level 1 Swim Teacher training program. The Trainer is to directly supervise, visually observe and evaluate all required knowledge and skills for Level 1 Swim Teacher.
Equipment: Level 1 Swim Teacher participants are required to have all materials listed in the training manuals.
Content: The knowledge and skills to be covered in the Level 1 Swim Teacher program are those provided in the SSI Level 1 Swim Teacher Trainer Manual and the SSI Level 1 Swim Teacher Manual.
Intent: The intent of the Level 1 Swim Teacher program is to provide Teachers with the training necessary to teach beginning swimming skills to a broad range of ages and abilities.
Minimum Age: The minimum age for participation in the Level 1 Swim Teacher program is 16 years of age.
Minimum Skill: Teachers in the Level 1 Teacher program are to demonstrate effective watermanship skills that include a 200-yard swim using a stroke of their chosing and a 10- minute survival float without the use of any floatation aids.
CPR/First Aid: Teachers in the Level 1 Teacher program are to maintain proof of current certification in CPR and first aid for children, infants and adults.
Program Duration: The number of classes, hours and sessions per day are set by the individual Trainer, based on teacher needs, teacher ability, class availability and water conditions.
Ratio: The maximum number of Level 1 Swim Teacher students for Classroom training is 12 to 1. The ratio may increase to 20 to 2 with another Certified Teacher assisting. The maximum number of Level 1 Swim Teacher students for In-Water training is 10 to 1. The ratio may increase to 12 to 2 with a Certified Teacher assisting or 16 to 3 with two Certified Teachers assisting.
Final Exam: Each teacher receiving a Level 1 Swim Teacher certification must have passed a Final Exam with a minimum passing score of 80%.
Apprenticeship: Each teacher receiving a Level 1 Swim Teacher certification must have completed a minimum 12 hours of apprenticeship under a certified Level 1 Swim Teacher.
Certification: Level 1 Swim Teacher entitles the holder to teach swim lessons to Aquatike I, Aquatike II, Aquatike III, Preschool Beginner, Advanced Preschool Beginner, Beginner I, Beginner II and Beginner III swim students autonomously.
Active Status: Active Level 1 Swim Teachers are required to maintain current professional liability insurance (if required in the local area) and current SSI Level 1 Swim Teacher materials.
