Adult Swim Teacher Training Standards
Trainer: An active Trainer or higher may conduct the Adult Swim Teacher training program. The Trainer is to directly supervise, visually observe and evaluate all required knowledge and skills for Adult Swim Teacher.
Equipment: Adult Swim Teacher participants are required to have all equipment listed in the training manuals.
Content: The knowledge and skills to be covered in the Adult Swim Teacher program are those provided in the SSI Adult Swim Teacher Trainer Manual and the SSI Adult Swim Teacher Manual.
Intent: The intent of the Adult Swim Teacher program is to provide non-certified swim teacher with the training necessary to teach swimming autonomously.
Minimum Age: The minimum age for participation in the Adult Swim Teacher program is 16 years of age.
Minimum Skill: Teachers in the Adult Teacher program are to demonstrate effective watermanship skills that include a 200-yard swim using a stroke of their chosing and a 10-minute survival float without the use of any floatation aids.
Prerequisite: A Swim Schools International certification of Level 1 Swim Teacher and Level 2 Swim Teacher is required prior to certification of Adult Swim Teacher.
CPR/First Aid: Teachers in the Adult Teacher program are to maintain proof of current certification in CPR and first aid for children, infants and adults.
Program Duration: The number of classes, hours and sessions per day are set by the individual Trainer, based on teacher needs, teacher ability, class availability and water conditions.
Ratio: The maximum number of Adult Swim Teacher students for Classroom training is 12 to 1. The ratio may increase to 20 to 2 with a Certified Teacher assisting. The maximum number of Adult Swim Teacher students for In-Water training is 10 to 1. The ratio may increase to 12 to 2 with a Certified Teacher assisting or 16 to 3 with two Certified Teachers assisting.
Final Exam: Each teacher receiving a Adult Swim Teacher certification must have passed a Final Exam with a minimum passing score of 80%.
Apprenticeship: Each teacher receiving a Adult Swim Teacher certification must have completed a minimum 3 classes of apprenticeship under a certified Adult Swim Teacher.
Certification: Adult Swim Teacher entitles the holder to teach swim lessons to Adult (over the age of 18) students autonomously.
Active Status: Active Adult Swim Teachers are required to maintain current professional liability insurance (if required in the local area) and current SSI Adult Swim Teacher materials.
